The Gamecock Oyster Yawl Restoration

In Whitstable Harbour you can see local Volunteers restoring a 42-foot Yawl built in 1906 and now registered as a National Historic Ship.

Background to the restoration

The Gamecock (registered as of ‘national significance’ by National Historic Ships) is more than a flagship; it is both a link with Whitstable’s past and a sea-going platform for activities such as sail training, teamwork and various activities designed to serve the needs of our community.

Why save Gamecock for the Nation? Gamecock is iconic to Whitstable and backed by a ‘rare set of circumstances’ according to the Director of National Historic Ships.

Gamecock was built by a Whitstable Company on the Whitstable beach! Gamecock is the last of a long line of Whitstable Oyster Yawls which dredged for an historical industry in local water. Gamecock was owned by local fishermen, rescued by local residents and is being renovated in local harbour! The restoration work is being led by a local Shipwright trained by a Shipwright apprenticed to former  Whitstable boatyard. Gamecock is an economically viable project in international tourist centre and Heritage Harbour.
